HomeServe Volunteers Team Up to Transform Walsall’s Green Spaces

HomeServe, one of Walsall’s largest employers, has partnered with Walsall Council’s Healthy Spaces team to launch a series of volunteering activities aimed at improving local parks and green areas.

Over the past few weeks, 54 HomeServe employees participated in four clean-up and habitat management sessions across the borough, totalling 132 volunteering hours, collecting 55 bags of litter and supporting vital biodiversity projects.

The initiative reflects HomeServe’s commitment not only to caring for their customers but also for the community where their people live and work. Nick Kasmir, CEO of HomeServe, said: “At HomeServe, we're incredibly proud of the difference our team makes to the neighbourhood around us. Walsall is our home, and by working together, we can ensure these areas remain clean, accessible, and beautiful for everyone to enjoy, now and in the future.”

The activities are part of an ongoing partnership aimed at creating lasting environmental and social benefits across Walsall. In this first phase, volunteers tackled tasks like litter picking, removing graffiti, and improving wildlife habitats.

Nathan Hill, one of the volunteers, reflected on the experience: “Litter picking might seem like a small act, but seeing the immediate difference really hit home. The streets looked cleaner, and knowing we were making a real impact in our own neighbourhood was incredibly rewarding.”

These clean-up and habitat management sessions have already had a noticeable impact on Walsall’s green spaces, improving biodiversity and creating cleaner, safer environments for local residents and wildlife.

Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing, said, praised the initiative, adding: “HomeServe’s involvement enhances our community while contributing to the positive environmental health of our area. By improving our green spaces, we support biodiversity, reduce pollution, and create a more sustainable environment for future generations.”

    Making a Difference: Key Activities

  • Reedswood Park Clean-up (Sept 25): Volunteers cleared litter from the playground, removed graffiti, and stencilled dog-fouling prevention messages.
  • Pelsall North Common Wildlife Habitat Project (Sept 26): Participants managed biodiversity by removing scrub and unwanted plant species, creating new habitats for local wildlife.
  • Reedswood Park Litter Pick (Oct 2): Employees covered the area surrounding HomeServe’s office, ensuring cleaner, more welcoming green spaces.
  • Victory Pools Habitat Management (Oct 3): Continuing the work from Reedswood Park, volunteers improved grassland and habitat conditions for the area’s biodiversity.

This partnership is only just beginning. HomeServe has pledged to continue its support, with more events planned leading up to Christmas and larger-scale activities scheduled for the summer.

The aim is to involve even more employees in volunteering efforts, further supporting Walsall’s green spaces and the broader community.
