How much does a central heating installation cost?

Surprisingly, some homes in the UK still rely on old-fashioned methods of heating their homes such as by gas fire or electric heaters. Whilst the initial cost of installing a new boiler and central heating system can be expensive, you could save money in the long run by improving the energy efficiency of your home heating and therefore reducing your energy bills*.

The price of a new central heating system varies and is typically dependent on the size of your home and the complexity of the installation. Generally, the cost of a new boiler installation will include the price of the boiler itself, any additional parts and pipework required, and labour provided by Gas Safe Registered engineers.

Boiler costs

The size of your home, and the number of radiators and bathrooms it has, will help to determine the type of boiler that will provide you with heat and hot water most efficiently.

The three most popular types of boiler are combi, heat-only and system. If you have a conventional or system boiler installed, an additional cost for a hot water cylinder and/or cold-water storage tank will be factored into your quote.

As no cylinder or tank is needed for a combi boiler to operate, this could be a less expensive option. If you are changing your boiler type from a conventional or system to a combi boiler, there could be extra cost for the removal of your water tank and/or cylinder.

Typically, the larger the kW output you require from your new boiler, the more expensive it could be.

Additional parts and requirements

The boiler is just one element of your central heating system, there are other components that are essential in order to create a warm home. There may be additional parts required which could increase the cost of your installation, for example:

• New radiators if your current radiators are old and inefficient, faulty or blocked up by debris
• A powerflush may be recommended to remove sludge and debris from your existing system
• Filters could be fitted to help prolong the life of your boiler and improve efficiency
• You’ll have the option of installing traditional or smart heating controls along with your new boiler
• Pipework may need replacing, rerouting or adding depending on the condition of your current pipework, and if you are wanting to relocate your new boiler

The examples above are not an exhaustive list and there may be other considerations which may not be stated.
